A bright farm child with a witty personality and a hearty laugh, Gabriel is content with his life on the plains of Rimark. He has the love and friendship of all in his village, including his childhood sweetheart Melanie. However, his village is attacked by a strange cavalry unit consisting of Rythan and human riders, and Melanie was killed. He meets up with Duke Lance Corsair of Rockfort, who's army had recently repelled the strange riders. Together, they search the land and sea for the force that took Gabriel's life away from him.

When looking at Rythans, Hrek is your stereotype. Strong, fast, and cunning: nobody that attacks him ever lives to learn his name. To his own race, he shows a kind heart and a helping hand; however, to the humans, he is a cold and quiet companion. He was sent by his father, Dragoon Hagnir D'zen, to find the location of several hundred kidnapped Cangneg Rythans. He found Gabriel and Lance hunting a strange army unit, and when Hrek learned of the Rythan riders, he decided to follow them....not for revenge, but to save his father's subjects.

The trio of Gabriel, Lance, and Hrek finds the boy in the midst of a burning village, as he is fighting off more of the strange dark-armored soldiers, and rather successfully.
